Its headquarters is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Chairmanship of BIMSTEC rotates according to the alphabetical order of the English names of the Member States.
BIMSTEC consists of seven-member states (five countries from South Asia and two from ASEAN) which are India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Thailand.
It includes all the major countries of South Asia, except Maldives, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Initially, it was an economic bloc with four Member States called BIST-EC (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic Cooperation).
Then it became BIMST-EC (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic Cooperation) following the inclusion of Myanmar.
With the admission of Nepal and Bhutan, it became BIMSTEC
