Twelve Vietnamese soldiers died in an explosion on Monday night during a military training exercise, according to state media. The accident happened at a shooting range in the 7th Military Region in Dong Nai province, southern Vietnam. A local military newspaper reported that the soldiers were transporting explosives when lightning struck during a storm, triggering the explosion through an electronic detonator.
Authorities have recovered most of the bodies, but search efforts are ongoing for those still missing, according to AFP.
The Vietnam News Agency said the Ministry of Defence has launched an urgent investigation into the incident.
The explosion occurred just a day after Defence Minister Phan Van Giang gave a speech to kick off the combat exercise, as reported by the state newspaper Nhan Dan.
