The Indian Navy received delivery of Mahendragiri, the sixth Nilgiri-class Project 17A stealth frigate, on 30 April 2026 at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL), Mumbai.
Mahendragiri is the fourth Project 17A frigate constructed by MDSL. The warship was designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) of the Indian Navy.
The frigate is a multi-mission stealth platform developed to address present and emerging maritime security challenges. Officials described the vessel as a major advancement in stealth, automation, survivability and combat capability.
Project 17A frigates are upgraded successors of the earlier Shivalik-class frigates. The project focuses on indigenous warship design and construction under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
According to verified official information, Mahendragiri was delivered within 17 months of the lead ship of the class. The delivery reflects accelerated indigenous warship production capability in India.
The frigate construction was overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai). The project followed the philosophy of integrated construction to improve shipbuilding efficiency and timelines.
Official defence sources confirmed that Project 17A warships incorporate advanced stealth features, modern sensors and enhanced platform management systems.
Mahendragiri derives its name from a mountain peak in the Eastern Ghats located in Odisha. The warship was earlier launched on 1 September 2023 at MDSL, Mumbai.
The induction of Mahendragiri strengthens India’s indigenous naval manufacturing ecosystem and supports long-term maritime capability development for the Indian Navy.
