Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the first North East Waree Leeba Festival 2026 on 2 November at Irom Meijrao Mamang Community Hall, Imphal West. The five-day festival promotes traditional Meitei storytelling. Best Book for Current Affairs & General Knowledge Preparation
Organised by the Repertory of Waree Leeba, Manipur, with Irom Meijrao Women for Cultural Centre, it received support under the Ministry of Culture’s Cultural Function and Production Grant Scheme.
Waree Leeba is a traditional oral storytelling art of Manipur’s Meitei community. It uses expressive narration, voice modulation and gestures to communicate mythology, folklore and historical narratives.
Ten troupes participated, comprising five from Manipur and five from other Northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura. Performances featured episodes from the Mahabharata.
