The supreme command of the Indian Armed Forces is vested in the hands of the President of the Republic of India. The Ministry of Defence is responsible to the Parliament for all matters concerning the defence services. Before Independence, Ministry of Defence was known as Defence Department. Ministry of Defence exercises administrative and operational control of the Armed Forces.
The three services i.e the Army, Navy & Air Force function under their respective Chief of Staff, who together form Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Chairmanship of which is given to the senior most member. INDIAN ARMY
Motto: “Service Before Self”
The basic aim of the Army is to safeguard the territorial integrity of the nation against external as well as internal aggression. General Sam Manekshaw was the only Field Marshall to have been appointed to this rank while still a serving officer. General K.M. Cariappa was the first Indian Chief of Army Staff.

INDIAN NAVY
Motto : “May the Lord of the Water be auspicious unto us”
In 1934 Royal Indian Navy was established. Its motto is Shano Varuna which means may the lord of the oceans be auspicious unto us. It is worth to know that the rank of the Admiral of the Fleet, (a honorary five star rank) has never been awarded in the Indian Navy.

INDIAN AIR FORCE
Motto: “Touch the Sky with Glory”
It was established on October 8, 1932. The first Indian Chief of Air Staff was Air Marshal S. Mukherjee. The rank of Marshal of the Indian Air Force was conferred on Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh in 2002.
