[GK Facts] CBI Director Praveen Sood Gets One Year Extension

The establishment of the CBI was recommended by the Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption (1962–1964). It is neither a constitutional body nor a statutory body.


In 1963, the CBI was established by the Government of India with a view to investigate serious crimes.


The Motto of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is “Industry, Impartiality and Integrity”.


In 2014, the Lokpal Act provided a committee for appointment of CBI Director:


  • Headed by Prime Minister

  • Leader of Opposition/Leader of the single largest opposition party

  • Chief Justice of India/a Supreme Court Judge.


Director of CBI has been provided security for two year tenure, by the CVC Act, 2003.


The Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Act, 2021 allows for extending the Director’s tenure from two years to a maximum of five years.


The extension can be given up to 1 year at a time.


CBI is also the nodal police agency in India which coordinates investigations on behalf of Interpol Member countries.
