[GK Facts] India's only active volcano in Andaman's Barren Island erupts twice in a Week

Baren Island is India's only active volcano and South Asia’s only confirmed active volcanic site.


Popularly known as a submarine emergent volcano, the island is a part of the Indian Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.


It is situated in the Andaman Sea, about 138 km northeast of Port Blair.


Barren Island Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.


It is a stratovolcano composed of lava, rock fragments, and volcanic ash.


The first eruption at Barren Island took place in 1787, followed by mild eruptions in 1991, 2005, 2017 and 2022.


The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were occupied by the Japanese in 1942 and later became the first part of India to be liberated from British rule in 1943 when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose visited Port Blair.


The Ten Degree Channel is a narrow strait that separates the Andaman Islands from the Nicobar Islands.


The Andaman and Nicobar Island is home to 5 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups: Great Andamanese, Jarwas, Onges, Shompens and North Sentinelese.


Indira Point, situated in Campbell bay on Great Nicobar Island, is the southernmost point of India. It was previously known as Pygmalion Point and Parsons Point.


There are some extinct and dormant volcanoes in mainland India. These are: Deccan Plateau (extinct, Maharashtra); Dhinodhar Hills (extinct, Gujarat); Dhosi Hill (extinct, Haryana–Rajasthan border); Tosham Hills (extinct, Haryana); and Loktak Lake (Manipur).
