Greenland, known locally as Kalaallit Nunaat, is the world’s largest island and functions as a self-governing territory with wide-ranging internal autonomy, while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Denmark continues to manage Greenland’s defence, foreign policy, and currency.
In 1721, Denmark began its formal colonization of Greenland with the arrival of missionary Hans Egede.
In 1953, the colony of Greenland was made an integral and equal part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Geographically, Greenland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, positioned between North America and Europe.
The island is marked by prominent mountain ranges such as the Watkins Range and the Stauning Alps, along with rivers including Borglum and Majorqaq.
Greenland has an extreme Arctic climate, with more than 80 percent of its landmass covered by ice sheets that reach thicknesses of up to 4 kilometres.
Winters are severe, with temperatures dropping to around minus 50 degrees Celsius, while summers are brief, with temperatures typically ranging between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius.
Parts of the island experience nearly two months of continuous daylight each year.
Greenland shares maritime boundaries with Canada, Iceland, and Norway.
It is also home to Northeast Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world.
During the Cold War, the United States established the Thule Air Base in Greenland, which remains operational to this day.
