Pinaka Rocket System Boost: Indian Army Expands Firepower - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | The Indian Army has operationalized its seventh Pinaka regiment and is raising an eighth, with plans to reach ten regiments by next year.

What is the Pinaka System?

Pinaka is an indigenous multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system capable of firing a salvo of 12 rockets in under 44 seconds.

It is designed as a high-volume, area-saturation weapon to neutralize enemy troop concentrations and infrastructure.

Development of Pinaka

The system was developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

Objective of Pinaka System

The primary objective of Pinaka is to provide deep-strike capability to the Indian Army.

It enables targeting of enemy communication hubs, logistics depots, and artillery positions deep behind frontlines.

Key Features of Pinaka

Rapid Fire Capability - A single battery of six launchers can fire 72 rockets in 44 seconds, covering an area of approximately 1,000 × 800 meters.

Range Variants - Pinaka offers multiple variants for operational flexibility.

  • Mk-I: 38 km

  • Mk-II Extended Range: 60 km

  • Guided variants: 75–90 km

High Precision Targeting - Guided Pinaka rockets use Integrated Navigation System (INS) with GPS/NavIC, ensuring pinpoint accuracy.

Mobility Advantage - Launchers are mounted on high-mobility Tatra trucks, enabling shoot-and-scoot tactics to avoid enemy counter-fire.

Advanced Automation - The system is equipped with Automated Gun Aiming and Positioning System (AGAPS) and a computerized fire control system for faster deployment.

All-Terrain Performance - Pinaka is built for extreme weather conditions, operating effectively from Ladakh’s high altitudes to the Thar Desert’s heat.
