Navy adds 3rd anti-submarine warfare craft Mangrol - Expected Defence Current Affairs 2026

Mangrol, the Indian Navy's third anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW-SWC), was commissioned on Monday, a step expected to strengthen the force's anti-submarine warfare capabilities, particularly in coastal waters where larger warships face operational limitations.

The Indian Navy commissioned Mangrol, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Monday, October 12, 2026.

Named after the coastal town and fishing harbour of Mangrol in Gujarat's Junagadh district, the vessel revives the name of erstwhile INS Mangrol (M85), a minesweeper that served till April 7, 2004.

With over 80 per cent indigenous content, the craft is propelled by water jets and equipped with state-of-the-art torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, advanced radars and sonars to detect and counter underwater threats in shallow waters.

The ceremony was presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.
