Rajnath Singh Clears ₹2.38 Lakh Crore Defence Boost - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | Defence Minister Rajnath Singh cleared procurement proposals worth ₹2.38 lakh crore, boosting India’s military capabilities across air defence, artillery, and surveillance systems.

S-400 Missile System Expansion

Approval includes procurement of five new S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia to strengthen long-range air defence capabilities.

India had earlier signed a $5.3 billion deal in 2018 for five S-400 systems, of which three have been delivered so far.

The 4th and 5th systems were delayed due to the Russia-Ukraine war, impacting delivery timelines.

Operational Performance of S-400

The S-400 system performed exceptionally well during Operation Sindoor, successfully keeping Pakistani aircraft, including J-10s, at bay.

It also recorded its longest hit during the 88-hour India-Pakistan conflict, showcasing its extended strike capability.

IAF Combat Success

On 7 May 2025, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully took down a JF-17 aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force within Pakistani airspace.

This action forced enemy fighters to retreat, strengthening India’s air dominance in the region.

Deployment Insights

During Operation Sindoor, two S-400 systems were deployed along the western theatre, though a small operational gap existed.

Other Key Defence Approvals

Several critical systems were approved to enhance multi-domain warfare capabilities.

Air Defence Tracked System for real-time control and reporting

High Capacity Radio Relay for reliable communication

Armoured Piercing Tank Ammunition to boost anti-tank lethality

Artillery and Surveillance Boost

The Dhanush Gun System will improve long-range artillery strike capability with greater accuracy and lethality.

The Runway Independent Aerial Surveillance System will enhance battlefield surveillance for Army units.

Indian Air Force Modernisation

For the IAF, approvals include Medium Transport Aircraft, S-400 systems, and Remotely Piloted Strike Aircraft.

The replacement of AN-32 and IL-76 aircraft will modernize transport capabilities.

Advanced Combat Capabilities

The S-400 system will counter enemy long-range air threats targeting vital areas.

Remotely Piloted Strike Aircraft will enable offensive counter-air operations and provide stealth surveillance and reconnaissance.

Su-30 Engine Overhaul

The overhaul of Su-30 aero engines will increase aircraft service life and meet operational requirements of the Air Force.

Record Defence Procurement Growth

In FY 2025-26, AoN for 55 proposals worth ₹6.73 lakh crore has been accorded.

Additionally, 503 capital procurement contracts worth ₹2.28 lakh crore have been signed, marking the highest ever defence procurement figures.
