A landlocked state or landlocked country is a sovereign state entirely enclosed by land, or whose only coastlines lie on closed seas. They have no direct access to a coastline providing access to the oceans. There are currently 49 such countries. The largest landlocked country by area is Kazakhstan. The smallest by area and population is Vatican City. The largest landlocked country by population is Ethiopia. All landlocked nations combined make up over 11% of the world’s total area and are home to nearly 7% of the world’s total population.
