INS Taragiri Commissioned: Boost to India’s Stealth Naval Power - Expected Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Taragiri, marking a significant milestone under Project 17A stealth frigate program. This enhances India’s maritime combat capability and strengthens its blue-water naval presence.

INS Taragiri: Key Highlights

INS Taragiri is the third stealth frigate under Project 17A, designed for multi-role operations including air, surface, and sub-surface warfare. It reflects India’s push toward modern naval warfare readiness.

The ship is built using advanced stealth features, reducing radar cross-section and improving survivability during combat operations.

Project 17A: Next-Generation Stealth Fleet

Project 17A is a follow-up to the Shivalik-class frigates (Project 17). It focuses on improved stealth, automation, and weapon systems.

A total of seven frigates are being constructed under this project at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).

Advanced Combat and Weapon Systems

INS Taragiri is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons, including surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and advanced sonar systems.

It also integrates network-centric warfare capabilities, enabling real-time data sharing across naval platforms.

Strategic Importance for India

The commissioning strengthens India’s ability to secure the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), a critical area for global trade and energy routes.

It supports India’s vision of self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in defence manufacturing, with a significant portion of indigenous content.

Indigenous Design and Construction

The frigate has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, showcasing India’s growing expertise in naval architecture.

Use of modular construction technology has reduced build time and improved production efficiency.
