The 15th Census of India and the 7th Census of Independent India - 2011 was conducted in two phases, house listing and population enumeration with the motto of 'Our Census, Our future'. The first phase began on 1 April 2010 whereas the second phase was conducted between 9 and 28 February 2011. In 2011 census, the biometric information was collected for the first time. According to the provisional reports released on 31 March 2011, the Indian population pegged at 1.21 billion with a surge of more than 181 million in the last 10 years. Adult literacy rate increased by 9.21% to 74.04%.

Sex Ratio, according to 2011 CENSUS of India is 940 that is 940 Females per 1000 Males. Highest sex ratio in state is Kerala (1084) and the Lowest sex ratio in UTs Daman & Diu (618).
Child (0-6 years) sex ratio in India is 914 that is 914 Females per 1000 Males. Highest child (0-6) sex ratio state is Mizoram (971) and the Lowest child (0-6) sex ratio in state is Haryana (830).
According to 2011 Census data, 84.14% of Males and 65.46% of the Females are literates. Average Literacy Rate (Males & Females combined) in India is 74%. The Highest Literacy Rate in state: Kerala – 93.11% and the Lowest Literacy Rate in state: Bihar – 63.82%.
EXTRA FACTS FROM INDIAN CENSUS
The first census of India after independence started on 9 February 1951 and continued till 28 February 1951.
In the modern era, census began with the British authorities holding census for the town of Allahabad in 1824.
The first complete census of an Indian city was done for Dacca (now in Bangladesh) by Henry Walter in 1830.
In 1865, the government of India decided that a general census of the country would be taken in 1871.
After that every ten years, regular census has been conducted by the government. 1941 saw the last census before independence.
After India attained independence, on Bhore Committee’s recommendations, the Census Act came into effect in 1948. The 1951 census was conducted in accordance with this act.
The whole state of Jammu & Kashmir was omitted during this census (past figures were taken).
This census revealed that only 18% of the population was literate and the average life expectancy was a mere 32 years.
The National Register of Citizens of India (NRC) was prepared after this census.
