The championship, organised by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), will now feature six teams instead of the originally planned seven, altering the competition structure and group dynamics.

The withdrawal is primarily linked to ongoing political and diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, which have repeatedly impacted bilateral sporting engagements.

The tournament is scheduled from 25 May to early June 2026 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, marking India’s second time hosting the women’s championship.

Following Pakistan’s exit, Group A includes Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, while Group B features India, defending champions Bangladesh, and Maldives

The SAFF Women’s Championship, launched in 2010, is a biennial tournament for South Asian nations, with India historically dominating early editions and Bangladesh emerging as recent champions.

Pakistan’s absence reduces competitive diversity and reflects how geopolitical issues continue to influence regional sports cooperation in South Asia.
