India and Algeria held their first Joint Commission meeting on defence cooperation in New Delhi. Both countries agreed to expand military training, defence industry collaboration, joint exercises, and medical cooperation under the 2024 Defence MoU framework. The meeting was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary for International Cooperation, and Major General Kaid Nour Eddine, Chief of Staff of Algeria’s Naval Forces. Senior officials from DRDO, Integrated Defence Staff, and Armed Forces Medical Services attended.
India and Algeria signed the “Rules of Procedure” document to institutionalise bilateral defence engagement. The framework will guide future Joint Commission meetings and implementation of defence cooperation projects.
Defence ties strengthened after the India-Algeria Defence Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024. High-level exchanges and growing African outreach under India’s strategic diplomacy accelerated bilateral engagement.
The Algerian delegation visited the National War Memorial in New Delhi and interacted with Indian defence industries. The visit highlighted India’s focus on defence exports and indigenous military manufacturing under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Algeria is Africa’s largest country by area and lies in North Africa along the Mediterranean Sea. Nearly 80% of its territory falls within the Sahara Desert, making it strategically important in the Maghreb region.
