Watch | The Indian Army raised its 16th Bhairav Battalion at the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, Belagavi (Karnataka).

The battalion was formally commissioned during a ceremonial event, marking a significant step in enhancing India’s infantry combat capabilities.

Command and Ceremony Details

The battalion was commissioned under the leadership of Brigadier Joydeep Mukherjee, Commandant of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre.

During the ceremony, the battalion flag was presented to the Commanding Officer of the newly raised unit.

What is a Bhairav Battalion?

The Bhairav Battalion, also known as the Bhairav Light Commando Battalion, is a specialised infantry formation designed to bridge the gap between conventional infantry and elite Special Forces.

These battalions are structured as lean, high-mobility tactical units capable of operating in complex and sensitive environments.

Structure and Composition

Each Bhairav Battalion consists of approximately 250–300 specially trained soldiers selected and trained for high-intensity missions.

Personnel are drawn from multiple arms of the Army, ensuring multi-domain operational capability.

Operational Role and Functions

The battalion is designed for rapid deployment, reconnaissance, surprise raids, and high-intensity combat missions in difficult terrains and sensitive border areas.

It also supports counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, enhancing flexibility in modern warfare scenarios.

Strategic Significance

The induction of the 16th Bhairav Battalion reflects the Indian Army’s focus on agile, mission-ready forces capable of responding to evolving threats.

These units reduce operational pressure on elite Special Forces by handling missions requiring speed and tactical precision.

The initiative aligns with broader military modernisation efforts aimed at improving readiness across diverse terrains and multi-front challenges.
