SIPRI Report: India 5th Largest Defence Spender 2025 - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | India emerged as the fifth-largest military spender in 2025, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report. Its total defence expenditure reached $92.1 billion, reflecting rising strategic priorities. 


India accounted for 3.2% of global military expenditure, placing it behind the United States, China, Russia, and Germany in overall defence spending rankings.


Growth in India’s Defence Expenditure


India’s military spending recorded an 8.9% increase in 2025 compared to 2024, highlighting sustained investment in defence preparedness and modernisation. 


This rise is linked to enhanced operational readiness, procurement of advanced systems, and strengthening of air power capabilities. 


Global Military Spending Trends


Global military expenditure reached a record $2.887 trillion in 2025, marking the highest level ever recorded. 


The United States, China, and Russia together accounted for 51% of global spending, reflecting concentration of military power among major nations. 


China, the second-largest spender, increased its military budget to $336 billion, reinforcing its regional and global military ambitions. 


India vs Pakistan Defence Spending


Pakistan’s military expenditure rose to $11.9 billion in 2025, ranking 31st globally, significantly lower than India’s defence budget. 


India’s defence spending remained nearly eight times higher than Pakistan, highlighting a major gap in military capabilities between the two countries. 


Strategic Significance for Exams


India’s rising defence expenditure reflects its focus on border security, military modernisation, and strategic preparedness amid regional tensions. 


SIPRI, established in 1966 and based in Sweden, is a globally recognised institute for tracking military expenditure and arms trends.
