Vikram-1 Becomes India's First Private Orbital Rocket - Expected Current Affairs 2026

Vikram-1, developed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, became India's first privately built orbital rocket to successfully reach Low Earth Orbit. Mission Aagaman lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, carrying multiple technology demonstration payloads. Best Book for Current Affairs & General Knowledge Preparation

The four-stage launch vehicle stands nearly seven storeys tall and uses an all-carbon composite structure to reduce weight. It can place payloads of up to 350 kg into Low Earth Orbit.

Mission Aagaman deployed payloads into a 450-km Low Earth Orbit with a 60-degree inclination. Technology demonstration payloads were carried for Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve Space and Germany-based DCUBED.

Skyroot Aerospace was founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. The company earlier launched Vikram-S, India's first private suborbital rocket, in 2022.

The mission validated key technologies, including propulsion, navigation, stage separation and orbital insertion. Data collected will support future commercial satellite launches and reusable launch system development.

The launch reflects India's expanding private space ecosystem after space sector reforms and IN-SPACe's regulatory support. Private companies now complement ISRO in commercial launch services and space innovation.

Vikram-1 strengthens India's position in the global small-satellite launch market, where demand is rising due to Earth observation, communication and scientific missions requiring cost-effective orbital access.
