US delivers MH-60R Seahawk to the Indian Navy - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | The United States has delivered another MH-60R Seahawk multi-role helicopter to the Indian Navy, strengthening maritime cooperation between the two countries. The delivery was announced by the U.S. Embassy in India.

The helicopter was delivered to the Indian Navy at Kochi. According to the U.S. Embassy, two more MH-60R helicopters were expected to arrive during the same week under the ongoing delivery schedule.

Role of the MH-60R Seahawk

The MH-60R Seahawk, developed by Lockheed Martin, is an all-weather maritime helicopter. It is designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), Search and Rescue (SAR), Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) and Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP) missions.

The helicopter carries advanced avionics, sensors and mission systems that improve the Indian Navy's capability to detect submarines, monitor maritime activities and conduct naval operations over long distances.

India–US Defence Cooperation

India signed a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement with the United States in February 2020 to procure 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for the Indian Navy. The induction forms part of the broader India–US defence partnership.

In November 2025, India and the United States also signed agreements for five-year sustainment support of the MH-60R fleet under the FMS programme to ensure long-term operational readiness.

Strategic Significance

The induction of additional MH-60R Seahawk helicopters enhances the Indian Navy's anti-submarine and maritime surveillance capabilities. These helicopters are intended to strengthen India's operational preparedness across the Indian Ocean Region.
