INTRODUCTION
Ram Nath Kovind born on 1 October 1945 at Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh is a Dalit leader and a politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party-BJP.
Kovind has done his B.Com, L.L.B. from Kanpur University (Uttar Pradesh). He married Savita Kovind on 30th May, 1974.
Kovind is the present Governor of Bihar since August, 2015 and the NDA choice for the position of the President of India.
FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT RAM NATH KOVIND
- Shri Ram Nath Kovind, was Central Government Advocate in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and Central Government Standing Counsel in Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.
- He is a former President of the BJP Dalit Morcha (1998-2002) and President of the All-India Koli Samaj.
- He was close to AB Vajpayee and LK Advani and was made national president of BJP’s SC/ST wing in 1999.
- Kovind was, during the two terms ( during 1994 - 2000 and 2000 - 2006 ) elected to Rajya Sabha from the state of Uttar Pradesh.
- Kovind served as a member of the Board of Management of Dr. B.R Ambedkar University, Lucknow. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata.
- Kovind took leading role in providing free legal aid to weaker sections of society, specially SC/ST women, needy and the poor under the aegis of "Free Legal Aid Society" in Delhi.
- Ram Nath Kovind emphasized on development for education in rural areas by helping in construction of schools in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
- He visited Thailand. Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, France, UK & USA on Study Tour as MP.
- He had been a crusader for the Rights and Cause of Weaker Sections since his days as a student.
- On June 19, 2017, BJP president Amit Shah declared him the NDA candidate for the post of Indian President
- Ram Nath Kovind defeats Opposition's candidate Meira Kumar
- Won two-thirds of the votes after counting today ( July 20, 2017 )
- He will be sworn in on July 25, 2017 to become India's second dalit President
