Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4, every year to commemorate the success of Operation Trident of Indian Navy that was carried out during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

On December 4, 1971, the Indian Navy carried out Operation Trident, which was a devastating attack on Pakistan Naval Headquarters of Karachi. The attack irreparably damaged destroyers and oil storage tanks at the Karachi port. To commemorate this, December 4 is celebrated every year as the Indian Navy Day.

  1. Navy Day does not commemorate the day the Indian Navy was founded. Rather, it is the day the Indian Navy successfully executed Operation Trident, an attack on Pakistani Naval Headquarters in Karachi so it burnt for a week.

  1. Operation Trident saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region.

  1. Pakistan lost a minesweeper, a destroyer, a cargo vessel carrying ammunition, and fuel storage tanks in Karachi.

  1. Sagar Pawan is one of the only two naval aerobatic teams in the world, the other being the Blue Angels of the US Navy.

  1. The Indian Navy's first independent mission was against the Portuguese Navy during the liberation of Goa in 1961.
