HAL Penalises GE Over Tejas Engine Delay Crisis - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | India’s indigenous fighter jet programme has faced a setback as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) imposed penalties on GE Aerospace for delays in supplying F404 engines used in the LCA Tejas Mk-1A aircraft.

Why HAL Penalised GE Aerospace

HAL has enforced contractual penalties (liquidated damages) on GE Aerospace due to delayed delivery of F404-IN20 engines. These engines are critical for powering the Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets.

The penalties apply to each delayed engine, reflecting India’s stricter approach to defence procurement timelines.

Impact on Tejas Mk-1A Programme

The delay has significantly affected the production and delivery schedule of the Tejas Mk-1A, which is a key component of the Indian Air Force’s modernization plan.

HAL depends heavily on timely engine supply for final assembly and induction of aircraft into the IAF.

Engine Supply Status and Delays

Under a 2021 contract, GE Aerospace was to supply 99 F404 engines for the Tejas Mk-1A programme. However, only around 5–6 engines have been delivered so far, far below expectations.

This shortfall has slowed down aircraft production despite HAL having ready airframes awaiting engines.

GE’s Response and Future Commitments

GE Aerospace has assured HAL that 20 engines will be delivered in the second half of 2026 to recover delays.

The company has attributed earlier delays to global supply chain disruptions, which impacted manufacturing timelines.

Negotiations on Advanced Engine Technology

Despite current issues, India continues discussions with GE for technology transfer of the more advanced F414 engine, planned for future platforms like Tejas Mk-2.

This reflects ongoing India–US defence cooperation alongside efforts to strengthen indigenous capability.

Strategic Significance for India

The Tejas programme is central to Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing. Delays in engine supply directly affect IAF squadron strength and operational readiness.

HAL’s penalty action signals a push for accountability and timely execution in defence contracts.
