A volcano is a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapour, and gas are or have been erupted from the earth's crust. Signs of unrest such as unusual earthquake activity or significant new gas emissions are signs that a volcano is active. Scientists define an ‘active volcano’ as one that has erupted in the last 10,000 years.
There are more than 1,500 volcanoes that could be active, 75% of which are located along the evocatively-named Pacific Ring of Fire. The Pacific "Ring of Fire" is an arc around the Pacific Ocean where there are 400+ volcanoes.
