What is Yellow Rust in Wheat?

Yellow rust is a fungal disease that turns the leaves into yellowish color and affects the photosynthesis activity, which eventually could result in a drop of yield. This yellowish colour fungus powder comes out on clothing or fingers when touched.

The yield due to the disease can get affected by between 5 and 30 per cent. This occurs when the rust colonies in the leaves drain the carbohydrates from the plant and reduce the green leaf area.

Rains coupled with a slight increase in the temperature and humid conditions are favourable for yellow rust.

This disease spreads easily during the onset of cool weather and when wind conditions are favourable. Rain, dew and fog favour the disease’s development.

In India, it is a major disease in the Northern Hill Zone and the North-Western Plain Zone.
