The Indian Navy welcomed its sixth missile and ammunition barge, LSAM 12 (Yard 80), during a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Friday. The event was led by Cmde Abhirup Majumdar, the Command Refit Officer of the Western Naval Command.
These barges will significantly enhance the Navy's operations by helping to transport ammunition and other supplies to ships docked at ports or stationed in outer harbors.
The Navy had signed a contract earlier this year in February with SECON Engineering Projects Pvt. Ltd., based in Visakhapatnam, to build eight such barges.
The barges were designed in India through a partnership between the shipyard and an Indian ship design firm.
Their performance and seaworthiness were successfully tested at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam.
Built following Indian Naval Rules and the standards of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), these barges are a step forward in boosting the Navy’s capabilities.
