The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nirdeshak, the second of four advanced Survey Vessel (Large) ships, at Visakhapatnam. Designed with over 80% indigenous content, this vessel follows INS Sandhayak, the first in its class, launched in 2021. INS Nirdeshak is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic survey systems, enabling precise underwater mapping.
The vessel measures 110 meters in length, displaces approximately 3,400 tonnes, and is powered by two diesel engines, allowing speeds exceeding 18 knots.
The ship is a product of the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, with construction by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
INS Nirdeshak carries forward the legacy of its predecessor, the erstwhile INS Nirdeshak, which served the Navy for 32 years before being decommissioned on December 19, 2014.
The name ‘Nirdeshak,’ meaning ‘Pathfinder,’ reflects the ship’s role in guiding naval operations.
