Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) delivered two advanced warships to the Indian Navy on Friday: the first stealth frigate of the Project 17A class, INS Nilgiri, and the fourth stealth destroyer of the Project 15B class, INS Surat.
The vessels have been designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by MDL under the supervision of the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai.
Both vessels will undergo sea trials before commissioning.
INS Nilgiri, equipped with close-in defence guns and advanced naval gunfire systems, is capable of independent operations without support vessels and can serve as the flagship of a naval task force.
INS Surat boasts cutting-edge armaments, including supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missiles.
The indigenous content in Project 15B destroyers stands at 72%, a substantial improvement over the 59% and 42% achieved in Project 15A and Project 15 destroyers, respectively.
