The Defence Ministry signed a ₹7,629-crore contract with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Friday for the production of 100 additional K9 Vajra-T 155mm/52 self-propelled artillery guns. This is a repeat order under the Buy (Indian) category.
The Indian Army previously inducted 100 K9 Vajra-T guns under a 2017 contract worth $720 million.
These guns will be manufactured locally under a technology transfer agreement with South Korean firm Hanwha Techwin.
Many of these guns have been deployed in the Ladakh sector after receiving upgrades for mountain operations, a shift from their original role designed for desert warfare.
The K9 Vajra-T, equipped with advanced technology, offers long-range precision fire capabilities, a high rate of fire, and adaptability to operate in sub-zero temperatures in high-altitude regions.
