The Indian Army has implemented a merit-based promotion system for Lieutenant Generals, introducing a quantified assessment model similar to that of the Navy and Air Force. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
Under this policy, officers will be graded on various attributes on a 1 to 9 scale. Effective from March 31, the new system aims to ensure merit-driven selections for key positions in tri-service theatre commands.
The revised policy includes updated annual confidential report (ACR) forms but excludes the vice chief of the Army and commanders-in-chief of the Army's six operational commands and one training command.
Although these eight officers hold the rank of Lieutenant General, they are positioned above other three-star generals.
The Indian Army currently has nearly 90 Lieutenant Generals, 300 Major Generals, and 1,200 Brigadiers within its 43,000-strong officer cadre.
