The PM-led Cabinet Committee on Security approved a ₹7,000 crore deal to procure advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) for the Army, replacing the outdated 105mm and 130mm guns. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
The contract includes 307 howitzers with a strike range of up to 45 km and 327 gun-towing vehicles to equip 15 artillery regiments.
The agreement is set to be finalized early next week.
ATAGS is India's first indigenously designed and developed 155mm/52-calibre artillery gun by DRDO.
It will be produced by Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems. Bharat Forge, the lowest bidder (L-1), will manufacture 60% of the guns, while Tata will produce the remaining 40%.
