India Ranks 2nd in Global Arms Imports: SIPRI Report Highlights - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2025

India was the world’s second-largest arms importer, although its arms imports fell by 9.3% between 2015–19 and 2020–24, as per Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here


Russia remained India's top arms supplier, accounting for 36% of imports, down from 55% in 2015–19 and 72% in 2010–14.


For the first time since 1990–94, China exited the list of the top 10 arms importers.


Ukraine became the world's largest importer of major arms between 2020–24, with imports rising nearly 100 times compared to 2015–19.


Ukraine received 8% of global arms imports during this period.


Additionally, four countries from Asia and Oceania — India, Pakistan, Japan, and Australia — were among the top 10 arms importers globally in 2020–24.
