The Border Security Force (BSF) is set to receive the government's final approval to raise 16 additional battalions, adding nearly 17,000 personnel to its ranks. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
These new units will enhance its strength along the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders.
The Union Home Ministry has also cleared the establishment of two forward command headquarters—one each for the BSF’s western and eastern commands—to bolster operational control on both frontiers.
Currently, the BSF operates 193 battalions. With each battalion comprising over 1,000 personnel, the addition of 16 more will significantly expand the force’s capacity.
While the BSF initially proposed raising 20–21 battalions, the government has sanctioned 16, marking a major step in strengthening India’s border security.
