Question: The Harsha inscription of 554 CE mentions the rise of Yajnavarman from which place?

A) Kannouj

B) Magadha

C) Gaya

D) Thanesar

Answer: C) Gaya

Yajnavarman was a Maukhari ruler in the Gaya region. The Maukharis were initially samantas (feudatories) under the Guptas. Their rise to power began from Gaya and later extended their dominion to Kanauj (Kanyakubja).

There are names of three Maukhari kings mentioned in the Nagarjuna inscriptions who ruled in Gaya. The first three Maukhari kings were Yagnavarman, Sardulavarman and Anantavarman.

The Malaya king, Devagupta attacked Kanauj and killed Grahvarman bringing the Maukhari kingdom to an end.
