The BRO, established on 7 May 1960, is an Indian executive force under the Ministry of Defence, to secure India's borders and develop infrastructure in remote areas of the north and north-eastern states.
The Headquarters of BRO is in New Delhi.
The motto of BRO is “Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam”, which translates to “Everything is Achievable through Hard Work.”
In order to ensure coordination and expeditious execution of projects, the Government of India set up the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB) with the Prime Minister as Chairman of the Board and the Defence Minister as Deputy Chairman.
BRO is also included in the Order of Battle of the Armed Forces, ensuring their support at any time.
One of BRO’s notable achievements is the Atal Tunnel, which holds the distinction of being the world’s longest highway tunnel at 9.02 kilometers. It reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kilometres.
The BRO provided vital support to the Indian Armed Forces during:
the 1962 Sino-Indian War,
the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, and
the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
