President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday (December 28) undertook a submarine sortie aboard the Indian Navy’s indigenously built Kalvari-class submarine, INS Vaghsheer, at the Karwar Naval Base in Karnataka. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
She became only the second President of India to experience a submarine sortie. The first was former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who went aboard a naval submarine in Visakhapatnam in February 2006.
President Murmu has also created a unique milestone in military aviation. She is the first Indian President to have flown in two Indian Air Force fighter aircraft, taking a sortie in a Rafale on October 29 earlier this year and flying in a Sukhoi Su-30 MKI in 2023.
In preparation for the presidential visit, stringent security arrangements were put in place.
Fishing activities were suspended along an 18-kilometre stretch of the coastline between Karwar and Majali to ensure complete security in the area.
