Operation Sindoor Commander Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor Takes Over as Vice Chief of Air Staff - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor has taken over as the Vice Chief of Air Staff, succeeding Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who superannuated on Wednesday after more than four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Air Force. Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here


Air Marshal Kapoor previously commanded the South Western Air Command (SWAC) during Operation Sindoor.


For his leadership during Operation Sindoor—under which the IAF conducted coordinated strikes on Pakistani air bases between May 6 and 10, causing substantial damage to military targets—he was awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal.


An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Air Marshal Kapoor passed out in December 1985 and was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on December 6, 1986, in the fighter stream of the flying branch.


A highly experienced aviator, he is an accomplished fighter pilot, a qualified flying instructor, and a certified fighter combat leader.


He has flown all variants of the MiG-21 and MiG-29 aircraft and has logged over 3,400 hours of operational and instructional flying on a wide range of combat and trainer platforms.


He has also served in a diplomatic role as India’s Defence Attaché to Pakistan.


Meanwhile, Air Marshal Tejinder Singh assumed charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Air Command, on January 1, 2026.
