Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Guwahati Science City at Tepesia in Sonapur, located on the outskirts of Guwahati. The initiative is designed to strengthen science awareness and experiential learning for students.
Project Cost and Size
The Science City has been developed at an estimated cost of around ₹300 crore and spreads across about 82 acres (around 250 bighas) of land. The facility is considered larger than Science City Kolkata in terms of campus area.
Developed with National Council of Science Museums
The project has been built jointly by the Government of Assam and the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), which functions under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Major Attractions Inside the Science City
The complex currently includes two key galleries designed for interactive learning and scientific exploration:
Eureka Gallery, and
Space Odyssey Gallery
These sections feature hands-on exhibits and immersive scientific displays aimed at making science engaging for visitors of all age groups.
More Facilities Planned
Authorities have announced additional facilities within the campus, including:
Science Innovation Centre, and
Science Park
These additions are expected to further promote research, experimentation, and innovation among young minds.
Five District Science Centres Also Inaugurated
Along with the Science City, the Chief Minister also virtually inaugurated five District Science Centres located in:
Amingaon,
Majuli,
Silchar,
Kaliabor, and
Bongaigaon
These centres feature science galleries, digital planetariums and auditoriums, making scientific education accessible across the state.
Boost to Scientific Temperament
The initiative aims to nurture scientific thinking, innovation and curiosity among students in Assam. Officials believe such infrastructure will help inspire future scientists, engineers and innovators from the Northeast.
