Watch | India has achieved another milestone in indigenous defence technology as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully tested the Air Droppable Container (ADC-150) from the P-8I maritime patrol aircraft.
DRDO Tests Indigenous ADC-150 From P-8I Aircraft
DRDO and the Indian Navy conducted four successful in-flight release trials of the ADC-150 from a P-8I aircraft off the Goa coast. The trials were carried out between 21 February and 1 March 2026 under different release conditions.
These tests validated the container’s performance in varying altitude, speed and maritime conditions, ensuring reliability during real operational scenarios at sea.
What is the ADC-150 Air Droppable Container?
The ADC-150 is an indigenously designed air-droppable logistics container capable of carrying up to 150 kg payload. It enables aircraft to deliver essential supplies directly to naval ships operating far from the coastline.
The system allows rapid air delivery of equipment, emergency stores, and medical supplies, improving response time during maritime emergencies or long-range naval missions.
Key Organisations Behind the Project
The project involved multiple DRDO laboratories working together to ensure operational integration with the Navy’s aircraft.
Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam – Nodal agency for development
Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra – Developed the parachute system
CEMILAC, Bengaluru – Provided flight clearance and certification
DRDL, Hyderabad – Supported instrumentation and data analysis during trials
Why This Capability Is Important for the Indian Navy
Modern naval operations often occur thousands of kilometres from the coastline. Traditional resupply methods require ships to return to base or depend on support vessels.
The ADC-150 enables aerial resupply, allowing aircraft to deliver critical stores or medical aid directly to ships at sea, especially those operating in deep-sea deployments or distress situations.
Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defence
The successful trials demonstrate India’s progress in indigenous defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
With all developmental flight trials completed successfully, the ADC-150 system is expected to be inducted into the Indian Navy soon, strengthening maritime logistics and operational endurance in the Indian Ocean Region.
