India Still World’s 2nd Largest Arms Importer: SIPRI Report - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | India continues to remain one of the world’s largest defence importers despite efforts to boost indigenous production. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the country was the second-largest arms importer globally between 2021–2025.

India Remains the World’s 2nd Largest Arms Importer

A recent SIPRI report states that India accounted for about 8.2% of global arms imports during 2021–2025, placing it second worldwide. Ukraine ranked first due to large-scale military assistance during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Although India’s imports remain high, the data indicates a gradual decline compared to earlier periods, partly due to increasing domestic defence manufacturing.

Russia’s Dominance in India’s Arms Imports Declining

For decades, Russia was India’s primary defence supplier. However, its share has declined significantly over time.

Russia’s share in India’s arms imports dropped from around 70% (2011–2015) to 40% during 2021–2025.

France and Israel Emerging as Key Defence Partners

As Russia’s share declined, France and Israel have emerged as major suppliers of military equipment to India.

According to SIPRI data, France accounts for about 29% of India’s arms imports, while Israel contributes nearly 15%

Major defence deals such as the Rafale fighter jet acquisition and cooperation in missile systems, drones, and surveillance technology have strengthened these partnerships.

India’s Push for Defence Self-Reliance

The slight dip in arms imports also reflects India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence manufacturing under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

India has been investing heavily in domestic defence production, technology development, and private sector participation to reduce long-term reliance on foreign suppliers.

Regional Security Concerns Continue to Drive Imports

Despite progress in domestic manufacturing, India continues to import advanced weapons due to ongoing security challenges and military modernisation needs.

Strategic tensions with China and Pakistan, along with the need for advanced aircraft, submarines, and missile systems, remain key factors influencing India’s defence procurement.
