Major Swathi Shantha Kumar, an officer of the Indian Army serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), has been conferred the UN Secretary-General’s Award 2025 for her initiative titled “Equal Partners, Lasting Peace.” Read: The Latest Defence Current Affairs Notes here
The award acknowledges her contribution toward advancing gender parity and strengthening gender-responsive peacekeeping efforts, establishing a notable example for women’s participation in international missions.
During her tenure with UNMISS, Major Swathi served as a Platoon Commander and led a 20-member women engagement team.
This deployment marked the first instance of an all-women peacekeeping team being deployed in South Sudan.
