Project KAL is an indigenous long-range strike or kamikaze drone being developed by the Noida-based defence company IG Defence. The system is designed to conduct deep-penetration strike missions inside hostile territory.
Unlike traditional UAVs, this platform functions as a loitering munition, meaning it can hover over a target area and then dive to destroy the target with an explosive payload.
Key Features of the Project KAL Drone
Range: Up to 1,000 km
Endurance: Approximately 3–5 hours of flight time
Mission Type: One-way strike or loitering munition
Payload: High-explosive warhead for strategic targets
These capabilities allow the drone to penetrate deep into contested areas, observe targets, adjust its flight path, and execute a precise strike when required.
Targets and Strategic Role
Project KAL is designed to attack high-value military and strategic assets. Potential targets include:
Radar installations,
Logistics hubs,
Strategic infrastructure, and
Critical military facilities
Such drones provide armed forces with a cost-effective precision strike option while reducing risks to pilots and frontline personnel.
Inspired by Global Drone Warfare Trends
Recent conflicts have highlighted the impact of low-cost long-range drones, particularly systems similar to Iran’s Shahed-136. These drones can overwhelm air defence systems because they are cheap to produce and deploy in large numbers.
Project KAL aims to give India a similar indigenous capability, enabling mass deployment of strike drones if required.
Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defence
The development of Project KAL reflects India’s growing focus on self-reliance in advanced defence technologies. By building such systems domestically, India reduces dependence on imported platforms and strengthens its defence innovation ecosystem.
If successfully deployed, Project KAL could place India among a select group of nations capable of developing long-range strike drones domestically, marking an important step in modern warfare capability.
