Indonesia Signs Deal With India to Buy BrahMos Missiles - Expected Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | Indonesia has entered an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, marking a major step in India’s expanding defence exports and strategic partnerships in Southeast Asia.

The agreement was confirmed by Indonesian Defence Ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait, who described it as part of Jakarta’s wider plan to modernise defence equipment and strengthen deterrence capabilities.

About the BrahMos Missile System

BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia under the BrahMos Aerospace joint venture. The missile is widely regarded as one of the fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles in the world.

The missile is capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms, providing high flexibility for modern military operations and precision strike missions.

Estimated Value of the Deal

Although the exact value of the agreement has not been officially disclosed, earlier negotiations suggested that the deal could be worth between $200 million and $350 million.

These discussions had been ongoing since 2023, indicating long-term strategic defence engagement between the two countries.

Strategic Importance for the Indo-Pacific Region

The agreement strengthens India–Indonesia defence cooperation and reflects India’s growing role as a reliable defence exporter in the Indo-Pacific region.

Indonesia aims to strengthen its coastal defence and maritime deterrence, particularly amid evolving security dynamics in Southeast Asian waters.

India’s Growing Defence Export Footprint

The BrahMos deal with Indonesia comes after India’s first international export of the missile system to the Philippines in 2022.

With rising interest from several countries, the missile system has become a key pillar of India’s defence export strategy and the ‘Make in India’ initiative in the defence sector.

Why BrahMos is a Strategic Weapon

The BrahMos missile is known for its high speed, precision strike capability, and versatility. Its supersonic speed significantly reduces enemy reaction time, making it highly effective for anti-ship and land-attack missions.

These characteristics have made the missile one of the most sought-after defence systems among countries seeking advanced strike capabilities.
