Watch | Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth received the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepali Army on 17 August 2026 in Kathmandu.

The honorary rank was conferred by Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel during an investiture ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu.

India-Nepal Military Tradition Since 1950

The conferment continues the longstanding practice between India and Nepal of awarding their respective Army Chiefs the honorary rank of General.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, India and Nepal have followed this honorary General tradition since 1950, reflecting the close relationship between their two armies.

The tradition began with General K. M. Cariappa, who became the first Indian Army Chief to receive the honorary General title in Nepal in 1950.

General Surendra Bahadur Shah was the first Chief of the Army Staff from the Nepali side to receive the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army in December 1969 from Indian President V.V. Giri.

General Dhiraj Seth is the 31st Chief of the Army Staff of India, having assumed office on 30 June 2026 after General Upendra Dwivedi.

He was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986 and is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla.
