India Signs ₹975 Cr TRAWL Deal to Boost Army Capability - Expected Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | India has taken a major step to strengthen its battlefield mobility with a ₹975 crore defence deal for advanced TRAWL systems. This move directly enhances the Indian Army’s minefield breaching capability in modern warfare scenarios.

What is the TRAWL System?

The TRAWL Assembly is a tank-mounted mine-clearing system developed by DRDO. It is specifically designed to neutralize anti-tank landmines and create safe passages for armored vehicles.

This system plays a crucial role in ensuring safe movement of troops and tanks during combat operations, especially in heavily mined battlefields.

Key Highlights of the Deal

The Ministry of Defence signed contracts with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics India Pvt Ltd for procurement.

The agreement was finalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, ensuring high-level administrative oversight.

Operational Role in Warfare

The TRAWL system enables the Army to create Vehicle Safe Lanes through minefields containing proximity magnetic fuse-based anti-tank mines.

This significantly improves combat survivability and mobility of T-72 and T-90 tanks, which are the backbone of India’s armored forces.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Capability

This procurement falls under the “Buy (Indian-IDDM)” category, promoting indigenously designed and manufactured defence systems.

It aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, strengthening domestic defence production and reducing import dependency.

Economic and Strategic Impact

The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment, especially through MSME sector participation in component manufacturing.

Strategically, it enhances India’s capability to operate in mine-infested combat zones, a critical requirement in modern mechanised warfare.
