IAF–GE Deal Boosts Tejas Engine Repair Capability in India - Latest Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | The Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed a crucial agreement with GE Aerospace to establish an in-country repair and overhaul facility for the F404-IN20 engines powering the LCA Tejas fleet. This marks a major step towards self-reliance in defence logistics and improved operational readiness.

What is the New Tejas Engine Facility?

The agreement focuses on setting up a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) depot in India for F404-IN20 turbofan engines used in the Tejas Mk1 aircraft.

This facility will be owned, operated, and maintained by the IAF, while GE Aerospace will provide technical expertise, training, support staff, and specialised equipment.

Why This Facility is Strategically Important

Currently, engine overhaul depends on overseas facilities, leading to delays and logistical challenges. The new domestic depot will:

  • Eliminate dependence on foreign repair centres

  • Reduce turnaround time for engine servicing

  • Improve aircraft availability and mission readiness

This is critical for maintaining combat efficiency of frontline fighter squadrons.

Impact on Tejas Programme

The LCA Tejas, India’s indigenous fighter jet, relies on the F404-IN20 engine for propulsion. Faster maintenance cycles will:

  • Enhance fleet serviceability

  • Increase sortie generation rate

  • Strengthen war preparedness of the IAF

The move directly supports India’s indigenisation goals under defence modernisation.

Role of GE Aerospace in the Project

GE Aerospace will not own the facility but will act as a technical partner, providing:

  • Training to IAF personnel

  • Specialised tooling and spare parts

  • Technical assistance and support staff

This reflects a shift from supplier relationship to long-term sustainment partnership.

The IAF–GE collaboration represents a major milestone in India’s defence self-reliance journey. By localising engine maintenance, India reduces external dependency and enhances combat sustainability, a critical factor in modern warfare.
