Exercise Pragati is a multilateral military exercise hosted by the Indian Army at the Foreign Training Node, Umroi, Meghalaya. The exercise was recently highlighted for strengthening India’s regional defence engagement in the Indian Ocean Region.
The full form of PRAGATI is Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. The exercise represents India’s growing focus on collective regional security and military cooperation.
The inaugural edition of the exercise includes participation from 11 friendly nations. These countries are Laos, Myanmar, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Nepal, Maldives, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bhutan.
Exercise Pragati aims to strengthen defence cooperation, improve interoperability among participating armies, and enhance mutual trust. The exercise also reflects the shared commitment of participating countries towards regional stability and collective security.
The military drill mainly focuses on counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. Joint training activities are designed to improve coordinated operational capabilities among participating forces.
The exercise is strategically important because it marks a transition in Indian Army engagements from mainly bilateral formats to a broader consortium-style multilateral framework.
Exercise Pragati also supports India’s larger regional security vision in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It aligns with India’s increasing emphasis on defence diplomacy and regional military partnerships.
