The recognition was conferred during the International Day of Women in Industry 2026 celebrations, highlighting global efforts toward gender equality and inclusive industrial development.

The first-ever International Day of Women in Industry (IDWI) was held on April 21, 2026.

GMC was honoured for its innovative model integrating women’s empowerment with sustainable waste management. The initiative reflects alignment with Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 5 and SDG 11. 

Under this programme, more than 200 women were trained and deployed as electric auto drivers for door-to-door garbage collection. These women were earlier part of the informal waste sector. 

The initiative operates under the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SCIAP), supported by UNIDO. It promotes zero-emission waste management using electric vehicles while creating green employment. 

UNIDO, a specialised UN agency headquartered in Vienna, focuses on inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The GEM Award recognises best practices in gender equality within industrial and urban systems. 

This achievement positions Guntur as a global model for gender-sensitive urban governance, combining climate action, livelihood generation, and sustainable sanitation systems.
