Watch | India and Sri Lanka conducted the fourth edition of IN-SLN DIVEX 2026 at Colombo from 21 to 28 April 2026. The bilateral diving exercise strengthened underwater operational coordination and maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.
The exercise involved participation from the Indian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy. India deployed INS Nireekshak, a Diving Support and Submarine Rescue Vessel, for specialised underwater operations and diving drills.
According to verified official releases, the exercise focused on improving interoperability during complex underwater search, rescue and salvage missions. Divers from both navies conducted harbour and open-sea diving operations during the engagement.
A major highlight of the exercise was the successful execution of deep-sea dives beyond 55 metres. The drills enhanced joint operational capability in challenging underwater conditions.
Divers also conducted mixed gas diving drills over World War-era shipwrecks near Colombo, including SS Worcester and SS Perseus. These operations tested technical proficiency and underwater coordination capabilities.
During the exercise, Rear Admiral SJ Kumara, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy, visited INS Nireekshak. He appreciated India’s continued support in training Sri Lankan naval divers.
The Commanding Officer of INS Nireekshak paid tribute at the IPKF Memorial in Sri Lanka. The wreath-laying ceremony honoured Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during Indian Peace Keeping Force operations.
India also handed over two BHISM cubes under the Aarogya Maitri initiative to strengthen Sri Lanka’s disaster response and medical preparedness capabilities.
Official releases further confirmed that the Indian Navy planned to hand over 50,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition to the Sri Lanka Navy during the engagement.
The exercise supported India’s MAHASAGAR vision, which stands for “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.” The initiative promotes maritime stability and regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.
