DRDO and Indian Navy Conduct Maiden NASM-SR Salvo Launch - Important Defence Current Affairs 2026

Watch | The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted the maiden salvo launch of the Naval Anti-ship Missile–Short Range (NASM-SR). The launch took place off the Odisha coast in the Bay of Bengal.

During the trial, two NASM-SR missiles were launched in quick succession from the same naval helicopter platform. The test marked India’s first salvo launch of an advanced air-launched anti-ship missile system

The missile launch was monitored using radar systems, telemetry instruments and electro-optical tracking systems deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur. Officials confirmed that all mission objectives were achieved successfully.

The NASM-SR missile also demonstrated its waterline hit capability, a critical anti-ship warfare feature designed to inflict maximum structural damage on enemy vessels.

According to verified defence reports, the NASM-SR uses a solid propulsion booster and a long-burn sustainer for extended operational performance. The missile has been developed indigenously through collaboration among multiple DRDO laboratories and Indian defence industry partners.

The successful trial strengthens India’s indigenous naval strike capability and supports the government’s focus on self-reliance in defence technology. The missile system is expected to enhance the Indian Navy’s helicopter-based anti-ship warfare operations.

The launch trials were witnessed by senior DRDO scientists, representatives of the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, along with Development-cum-Production Partners.
